Homework due Thursday, November 1st
Read through the second portion of Chapter 1 in Earth Science Part 2 on Beyond
Books. Go to http://www.beyondbooks.com/ and click on the login button. Log in using
your username and password and select “Mr. Ende 8 East.” Click “Earth Science: Part
2.” Click on the first chapter, “Earth’s Structure.” You will be reading sections 1c and
1d for homework. Answers to questions are to be typed and double-spaced. Make
sure you read and answer each question fully!
Read through section 1c, and take down very general notes on the mantle (how it
“works,” what it is made of, etc.). Use the dictionary on the left side of the screen to
look up any unfamiliar terms. After completing the reading, answer one of the
following two questions (do not answer both)
1. Based on your reading, would the mantle be considered a solid or a liquid? Why?
OR
2. How are the lithosphere and asthenosphere different? (Describe at least two
reasons). Why are they both part of the geosphere?
Read through section 1d, and take down very general notes on the crust (differences
between oceanic and continental, etc.). Use the dictionary on the left side of the
screen to look up any unfamiliar terms. After completing the reading, answer one
of the following two questions (do not answer both)
1. How is oceanic crust different from continental crust? What are each of these
types of crust made up of, and how “deep” below the surface do they go?
OR
2. Try the Beyond-Books interactive at the bottom of the text section (it’s a yellow
box). Complete the interactive by answering questions based on the Earth’s
interior readings you have done. After you complete the interactive, identify
which questions were tough for you to answer, and which were easy. Explain
why.
