Tentative Outline
Topic (Atkins and de Paula Chapters)
We will basically cover Part 1 of this text.
4. Phase Equilibria and Transitions (6,8,9)
1. Properties of Gases (1)
5. Mixtures and Solutions(7)
2. First Law of Thermodynamics (2,3)
6. Electrochemistry (10)
3. Second Law of Thermodynamics (4,5)
Text: Primary: Physical Chemistry, 7th ed., P. Atkins and de Paula, Freeman, 2002 (earlier versions of this
text will work, but make sure you do the right problems.) Don't forget to look at the appendices.
Grading/Exams: Grades will be based on 3 (probably) equally weighted exams, plus home work
assignments. We will decide, in class, on how much weight will be given to home work
assignments. Exams will be announced prior to when they will be given. You will be allowed
to bring a calculator and one note card (w/ equations, etc.) to class for the exam. The material
covered by the exam will include the text and lecture.
Advice:
Try to work the problems assigned by yourself. If you don't get the right answer, discuss the
approaches with your classmates.
Office Hours: Generally, I will try to be available from 3-4 M, T, Th. I will also be available by
appointment (afternoons preferred). I have set up a discussion list on e-mail. It is called
[email protected]. If you send questions here, the whole class will benefit from the answers
(I hope).
