INTRODUCTION TO BIOLOGY AND SCIENTIFIC METHOD OBJECTIVES Identify common lab equipment by name and learn to use it safely. Identify these parts of an experiment: Independent (manipulated) variable, dependent (measured) variable, control group, experimental groups, and constants. Use the independent and dependent variable to write a hypothesis. Interpret graphs and charts to derive the meaning of the data. Analyze qualitative (descriptive) and quantitative (numerical) data to accept or reject a hypothesis. Contrast the common meaning of” theory” with the scientific meaning. Recognize the changing nature of science and the benefits of scientific collaboration. Contrast theories of abiogenesis with biogenesis. Know the role of Redi, Needham, Spallanzani, and Pasteur in this debate. Perform multiple experiments and write the results in a formal lab report throughout the class. Know what each part of the STERNGRR life processes acronym means, and provide an example and a brief description. Given a description, be able to recognize the STERNGRR life process described. BIOCHEMISTRY OBJECTIVES Identify acids and bases as numbers on the pH scale and explain how buffers are used by cells to maintain pH balance. Use the terms atom, element, molecule and compound appropriately. Differentiate between organic and inorganic compounds. Identify the four major organic compounds and name the monomers or subunits of each. Using paper models to build the four organic compounds. Identify each of the four major compounds when given a chemical or a structural formula. Describe the functions of the major compounds. Compare the energy providing compounds (carbohydrate and lipid) vs the structural material (protein). Give common examples of the four major compounds. Use chemical indicators to identify the presence of organic compounds. Explain how the amino acid sequence of a protein is related to its function. Recognize enzymes as a type of protein the regulate all chemical reactions in an organism. Interpret a graph showing the rate of a biochemical reaction with and without an enzyme and explain that enzymes catalyze the reaction by lowering the activation energy. Diagram an enzyme-mediated pathway, using labeled shapes to represent the enzyme, substrate, enzyme-substrate complex, and products. Differentiate between a synthesis and decomposition reaction and provide an example of each. Identify environmental factors that cause an enzyme to denature, and explain what this means. Discuss the characteristics of enzymes, (including specificity and reusability) and demonstrate these characteristics in a laboratory setting. Perform an experiment in which the environmental conditions of an enzyme are altered, and measure the effect on the enzyme.
