Background
The NSW Pap Test Register is a database containing cervical cancer test results for NSW
women. It is a key part of the NSW Cervical Screening Program, which aims to reduce the
incidence of, and mortality from, preventable cervical cancer. The register acts as a safety
net to remind women and their health practitioner when a cervical test is overdue and or
when an abnormal test result requires follow-up treatment.
The NSW Pap Test Register is owned by the Director-General of Health NSW and is
administered by the Cancer Institute NSW.
The Register commenced operations in 1996. It currently holds around 12,000,000 records
for 4,000,000 women and accrues around 600,000 records per year. Almost 100 per cent of
all women who have a Pap test are on the Register, however, being included on the Register
is voluntary.
