Fort Sumter: The Confederates attack Fort Sumter (Union property) in South
Carolina, and Lincoln decides to go to war.
3 events that led to war: The issue of slavery, election of Lincoln (1860), the
arguments over states’ rights.
Secession: To withdraw from a group, in this case, from the Union.
First Bull Run: The first major battle of the Civil War, a Confederate victory.
Stonewall Jackson: A famous Confederate general that worked cooperatively with
Lee; he earned his nickname for his defense skills.
George McClellan: The Union Chief of Army, his hesitations sometimes limited his
abilities to fight some major battles.
Robert E. Lee: The Confederate Chief of Confederacy, he led many victorious battles
until the Union forces took over the Civil War.
Ulysses S. Grant: A famous Union general that appeared during the later days of the
War. He would later become the president.
Seven Days Battle: A Confederate victory that pushed the Union off Richmond.
Ironclads: Warships armored with iron.
Anaconda Plan: The Union plan to blockade the Southern ports and slowly back the
Confederacy off.
Vicksburg: A Union victory that gave the Union control of the Mississippi and
divided the Confederacy in half.
Shiloh: The bloodiest battle of the Civil War, a Union victory.
Emancipation Proclamation: Lincoln’s speech in 1863 that freed all the slaves of the
Confederacy.
Gettysburg Address: A three-minute long speech that President Lincoln delivered,
praising the Union soldiers and emphasizing the development of democracy.
Gettysburg: Another bloody battle of the Civil War, a turning point of the war, as
well as the capture of Vicksburg.
Pickett’s Charge: A charge by Confederate forces into the centre of the Union line,
devastating Confederate forces but failed to achieve any progress.
William Sherman: A Union general that took Atlanta and led the March to the Sea.
Wilderness Campaign: A series of battles launched by the Union army led by the
newly appointed Grant aimed at capturing Richmond, Virginia. Grant failed to
achieve any progress before Lincoln's reelection, however, leaving it up to Sherman
to take Atlanta and bolster Lincoln's reputation and popularity.
Appomattox Courthouse: The place where Lee officially surrenders to Grant,
eventually ending the Civil War (1865).
John Wilkes Booth: A former actor that assassinated Lincoln.
