COMMON FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT PLANNING TEMPLATE --FIRST DRAFT-Grade Level or Course: 8th grade science Authors: Christine Willman Assessment Topic: Human Body Systems Selected Power Standards: List standards by number and include the full text here. Then “unwrap” to identify what students need to know and be able to do. Underline the concepts (important nouns or noun phrases) and circle the skills (verbs). C17: Explain how the human musculo-skeletal system supports the body and allows movement. GLE’s 1. Investigate and explain in writing the basic structure and function of the human skeleton system. 2. Differentiate between the structures and range of motion associated with ball, socket and hinge joints and relate human joints to simple machines. 3. Demonstrate how the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones interact to support the human body and allow movement. Refer to Bloom’s Taxonomy resource in supporting documents.) Explain (2) Big Ideas from “Unwrapped” Power Standards 1. The muscular and skeletal systems interact to support the body and allow movement. Parts of a system work together to make the whole entity work. The five main functions of the skeletal system are: to shape and support the body, protect internal organs, enable movement, form blood cells and store minerals. 2. The skeleton muscles are attached to bones by tendons and they are responsible for the movement of the body. Joints are places where the bones come together and body movement can occur. The structure of the joint determines the kind of movement possible. 4. The cardiac muscle is responsible for the pumping action of the heart and the smooth muscles are related to the movement of the internal organs. Essential Questions Matched to Big Ideas 1. What two systems interact to support the body and allow for movement? What are the five main functions of the skeletal system? 2. What are the four types of movable joints and why are they important? 3. How does the structure and function of the skeletal muscle compare and contrast with the cardiac and smooth muscles? © 2007 by Center for Performance Assessment All rights reserved.
