4)Read the text and fill the gaps using the verb in the right tense:
Most animal species on earth (to be) invertebrates. Some of them, such as insects, (to
have) got an exoskeleton; others, like the jellyfish,(to have) got a fluid-filled, hydrostatic
skeleton. There (to be) several types of invertebrates: porifera, cnidarians, annelids,
molluscs, arthropods and echinoderms
What animals are invertebrates?
Among the simplest invertebrates (to be) the porifera, commonly called sponges. These(to
be) asymmetrical aquatic organisms with no distinct tissues or organs. Their bodies(to be)
filled with holes through which water (to circulate) continuously. This water flow(to
provide) food and oxygen.
Cnidarians (to be) the simplest form of life with tissue organisation. This group is diverse
in form, but they all (to have) got radial symmetry. The ends of the structures(to have)
got tentacles with stinging cells (to use) to capture food. Cnidarians(to have) a single
opening that (to act) as both mouth and anus. Cnidarians can(to have)two basic body
shapes: the polypoid shape of corals and anemones, which is(to fix) to a substrate or
anchored to a colony, and the medusoid shape of free swimmers, like the jellyfish.
Annelids(to have)got a complex organ system, including well-developed reproductive and
digestive organs, and an open circulatory system. Their bodies (to be divided)into similar
external and internal segments called metameres. These creatures (to have) got bilateral
symmetry. Annelids (to include) earthworms, leeches and marine worms (to know) as
polychaetes.
Molluscs (to be) characterised by a soft body, an internal or external shell and a muscular
foot. Molluscs (to be) divided into three groups: gastropods, such as snails, bivalves such
as clams, and cephalopods such as the octopus.
Echinoderms (to be) aquatic animals which(to have)got a hard spiny covering, a calcite
skeleton and radial symmetry. Echinoderms (to have)got a watervascular system, and a set
of water-filled canals or tube feet which they (to use) for locomotion, protection and to
obtain food. A starfish is an example of an echinoderm.
Arthropods (to be) the most numerous and varied of all animals. They (to have) got an
exoskeleton and jointed appendages. Their bodies(to be) divided into segments. They (to
have) got differentiated sensory organs. Insects, arachnids, crustaceans and miriapods(to
be)different groups of arthropods
