Syllabus, Grading and Conduct
Welcome! Integrated Science is a survey class that will prepare you for the higher level,
specialized high school science classes of Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry and Physics. Much
of this year's material builds on what you have learned in middle school, but at a more advanced
level.
Our subjects will be presented in quarter sections, 10 weeks each, as follows:

Graphing
Area
Volume
Mean, Median, Mode and Average
Motion and Force
Atomic Structure
Second Quarter, 10/17/11 - 12/21/11:
Atomic Structure
The Periodic Table
Phases of Matter
Classification of Matter
Chemical Bonds
Kinetic Theory of Matter
Earth and the Universe
Third Quarter, 1/4/11 - 3/16/11:

Land, Forest, Fishery and Air Resources
Biodiversity, Habitat Alteration, Pollution, Introduced Species
Global Climate Change
As you can see, we have a lot to learn!
Buena High School's Freshman Science Curriculum is designed to fulfill the objectives of the
Arizona Department of Education High School Science Standards
http://www.ade.az.gov/standards/contentstandards.asp. These objectives enable Arizona students
to achieve a high level of scientific literacy, for informed citizenship, competitive workplace
skills and personal exploration driven by curiosity and the joy of learning.
Grading
Your quarter grades will be based on the number of points accumulated over the quarter.
Grade Scale: 90%-100% = A; 80-89% =B; 70-79% =C; 60-69% =D; 59% and below =F.
Report cards are issued at the end of every quarter but official transcripts only include first and
second semester grades.
F.A. Integrated Science is a lab class. Students will be graded on group work in labs and
presentations, and individual work in class assignments, homework, an independent project,
quizzes, tests and two final exams, one in December and one in May.
The finals count 20% toward the grade each quarter.
Additional quizzes and tests will count 30%, labs 20% and other assignments 30%.
Make-up Tests/Labs
Late work will only be accepted per the BHS handbook policy
(http://sierravistapublicschools.com/Buena/1569-Students.html).

Student Conduct
Students are expected to behave appropriately in the classroom. All BHS rules will be strictly
enforced in the classroom. All students are expected to contribute in a positive manner to the
academic environment in the classroom. Core expectations include the following:
1. Be respectful of yourself, others and your environment.
2. Be responsible—prepared for class, on time and on-task.
3. No food, drink (bottled water is acceptable), or gum at any time.
4. No personal grooming in class (makeup, brushing, combing).
Classroom Attendance
Successful academic achievement is closely related to attendance.
 Students are expected to attend class every day and to be on time.
 The BHS tardy policy will be strictly enforced.
 Students are expected to be in their seats and prepared to work on the bellwork when the
final bell rings.
 No passes are issued during the first 10 minutes of class or the last 10 minutes of class.
 Passes will not be issued to go to lockers or to get drinks.
 Passes will only be issued for urgent reasons.


Currently, students and parents/guardians can obtain information on classroom activities,
assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests on the internet at the district site
(http://sierravistapublicschools.com/Buena/Class/550-Freshman-Integrated-Science).

You will be notified when our new online Genesis system is available for grade and
assignments checks.

My classes work in a blended online environment, Moodle,
https://moodle.svps.k12.az.us/login/index.php. You should obtain a password and user
name within the first few weeks of school; please contact me if you are not able to access
Moodle to review student work by the third week.
