FIRST SEMESTER, 2009/2010
This is an introductory course in medical microbiology for medical, dental, and pharm D
students, designed mainly to prepare students to understand the systemic microbiology of the
modules, it covers basic principles of bacteriology, virology, mycology, immunology and
parasitology, also it covers basic concepts of infection control in hospitals, sterilization and
disinfection, and specimen collection for the clinical microbiology laboratory. The laboratory
part covers basic techniques in microbiology.
Textbook used: Microbiology for the Health Sciences sixth edition, by Gwendolyn Burton and
Paul Engelkirk.
Course grades: Three exams are going to be given during the course, the first midterm is worth
30% will be held after the sixth week, the second midterm will be worth 30% and also will be
worth 30% and will be held after the 12th weeks of the course, and a final exam worth 40% of the
total grade at the end of the semester.
Methods of instruction: The course is of three credit hours, it has two lectures per week and one
laboratory.
