Heart Disease and Cancer Web Quest
You have just received your first job as the Director of Wellness at Bank America. After surveying
employees, you have found that many are dealing with cancer or heart disease themselves or within their
families. Concerned for their wellbeing, you have decided to create a presentation for employees to
access and learn more about each disease. When you discuss this idea with your boss, they give you the
following parameters:
You have a choice of technology for the presentation. You must choose one of the
following:
1. Construct a Web site.
2. Construct a PowerPoint presentation.
Your website or power point must include at least the following information:

Risk factors and how to reduce them

What can you do to prevent heart disease/cancer

What is the treatment

What are warning signs

How age, sex, race or family history impacts the disease

How can heart disease/cancer be prevented
Once the presentation is completed, it will be presented to employees on

Cancer Web Quest Information
Introduction
Cancer is a frightening disease. One way to confront that fear is to know more about the disease,
how to cut your risk factors, and how to deal with the disease if you or someone you know has it.
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth of abnormal
cells. If the spread of the cells is not controlled, it can result in death. Risk factors
increase the possibility of a person having cancer. These factors can be external
such as chemicals, radiation and viruses or internal such as immune conditions,
hormones, and inherited mutations. These factors may act together or by
themselves to promote carcinogenesis. Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormones,
and immunotherapy currently treat Cancer.
This year about 563,100 Americans are expected to die of cancer. This is more than 1,500
people per day. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded
only by heart disease. In the last decade over 5 million people have died from cancer.
Many cancers can be prevented or treated successfully if found early enough. You can make
a difference in your life and perhaps in the lives of your family and friends by learning more
about the risk factors that cause cancer. Did you know that ALL cancer caused by cigarette
smoking and heavy use of alcohol can be prevented completely? Did you know that it is
predicted that one third of all cancer deaths could be prevented if young people would
adapt good nutrition habits? Did you know that one million skin cancers are predicted for
just next year but using blockers to protect from the sun’s rays could prevent them?
This quest could save your life or the life of someone you love.
Are you ready? Can you handle the challenge?
Task
Your team is to visit various web sites to discover the keys to prevention of cancer. Along
the way learn a bit about the disease and its treatment. When you have all the information
you need, you are to create a power point or webpage to share with family and friends to
help them understand the risk factors and how they can change what they do now to help
them prevent getting cancer later.
Good luck.
The lives of your friends and family rest on what you find out!

Heart Disease Web Quest
Introduction
In class you learned that heart disease is the number one cause of death in the
United States. We also learned that one-third of you will develop heart disease.
Now you should learn how to prevent yourself from developing this disease. Many
of the risk factors can be controlled or managed, and by doing this web quest you
will gain knowledge and hopefully reduce your chances of developing heart
disease.
Are you at risk for a heart disease? What are the major risk factors? How can you prevent heart disease?
The Task
The purpose of this Web Quest is to use the Internet as a research tool on the
topic of heart disease risk factors and heart disease prevention. You will then
present your information in a power point or a web site to the class.
The Process
You will be using Internet sites (links) that I have located for you.
