Unit 1 wrap up Notes and Study Guide
Succession is the gradual process by which some species replace other species.
Primary succession is the gradual growth of organisms in an area that was previously
bare.
Secondary succession- the gradual growth of organisms in an area that previously had
organisms living on it.
Ex. Regeneration of a forest after it has been burned
-Biological control- it eliminates the need for pesticides by using a species natural
predator to control the population.
-Introduced species- is a species of animal that are not naturally occurring and are
accidentally introduced.
Ecosystem monitoring- this is a way to check the state of an ecosystem
Must know: the term producer and must be able to identify an example of it.
Consumers- definition and example
Be able to draw a food chain
Be able to identify the following : omnivore, carnivore, herbivore, decomposer,
scavenger, water cycle, know parts and be able to explain them about the carbon cycle,
primary succession, secondary succession, 3 types of symbiotic relationships, be able to
explain the term niche.
Know the niche of a decomposer and the niche of a scavenger. Pyramid of numbers and
what is at the base of the pyramid.
Know the difference between an inherited characteristic that is an adaptation and a
behavioral characteristic that is an adaptation.
Be able to discuss how to reduce your ecological footprint
