TWO KINDS OF GEOGRAPHY
• Physical Geography - study of the natural features
that cover the Earth
• Cultural Geography - the study of the impact of
human culture on the landscape
THEME ONE OF GEOGRAPHY: PLACE
• Now you try: Under the thumb are examples of
Physical and Cultural Geography. First label which
section is physical and which section is Cultural.
Then label the examples. You have one minute.
THEME TWO OF GEOGRAPHY: LOCATION
• Absolute Location – describes the location of a place based on a fixed point
on earth
• Relative Location – describes the location in relation to another point or place
• Now you Try: Where is your classmate?
THEME THREE OF GEOGRAPHY:
HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS
• Interactions between the human social system and (the
“rest” of) the ecosystem.
• Now you try: Draw your own example of human and
environment interactions
THEME FOUR OF GEOGRAPHY:
HUMAN MOVEMENT
• Movement is the travel of people, goods, and
ideas from one location to another
• Examples: Migration, Westward Expansion,
Campaign Trail
THEME FIVE OF GEOGRAPHY: REGION
• Regions are areas with distinctive characteristics:
human characteristics, such as demographics or
politics, and physical characteristics, such as climate
and vegetation.
• The United States is a political region because it
shares one governmental system.
PROCESSING ACTIVITY:
MAP OF MY SPACE
• Think about your favorite space, or place to be. (Ex: Living Room)
• Now draw a map of your favorite place.
• Next include the Five Themes of Geography and Label
– You already have your Place, make that your title
– Subtitle can be the Location (Ex: 2823 Cherry Tree Lane, center of the
home)
– Label an example of Human Environment Interactions
– Label an example of Human Movement
– Draw an inset map of the Region
