Unit 2 Post-Test: Computing with Whole Numbers & Decimals
Study Guide – Test *Thursday January 26, 2017
I. Adding and subtracting with decimals and with money
Remember to always line up place values! Add “place holder zeroes” if needed.
II. Know and be able to use and apply the 3 properties of multiplication and/or Addition
Commutative Property
4x6=6x4
Associative Property
2 x (3x 8) = 3 x (2x8)
Distributive Property
6 x 24 = (6x20) + (6x4) OR 2 x (3+8) = (2x3) +(2x8)
III. Multiplication
Estimation by rounding to the highest place value, or rounding to 10, 100, or 1000.
2 by 2, 3 by 1 or 3by 2-digit multiplication with or without decimals.
You can use traditional, expanded or array method.
When asked to use a model, use array or place value (dot) methods.
With decimals, multiply as if the decimals are not there, then estimate or “count decimal
places” to determine correct place value.
IV. Division
Divide numbers with 2,3, and 4 digit dividends and both 1 or 2 digit divisors
Divide numbers with whole numbers and decimals in the dividend.
Estimate using compatible numbers; 512 ÷ 67 ≈ 490 ÷ 70 = 7
V. Word Problems
Underline question. Write down what you know. Choose operation and solve. Check answer fits back
into question. Use CSRQ for final answer and be sure to include units!
