Glycolysis Questions
Using the diagram provided and page 65-66, answer the following questions.
1. Where does glycolysis occur?
Cytoplasm in cells of almost all species
2. a) How many ATP are used?
2
b) How many ATP are made?
4
3. What happens to the Pi group lost from ATP?
It becomes part of the glucose molecule (or its
derivative – F6P).
4. Where does the Pi group come from when ATP is made?
The glucose derivative (BPG and PEP)
5. How many enzymes are used in glycolysis?
10
6. Identify coupled reactions in Glycolysis.
1, 3, 6, 7, 10
7. Explain substrate-level phosphorylation in your own words.
When a substrate gains a phosphate from another
molecule.
8. What type of enzyme is used in the step: DHAP  G3P?
Isomerase
F1,6BP  G3P?
Lyase
PEP  Pyruvate?
Kinase
9. If you burn glucose, you get 2870 kJ of energy. ATP stores 30.5 kJ. How efficient is
glycolysis alone? (Keep in mind your answers to questions 1 and 2)
% efficiency = (energy output)/(energy input) x 100%
% efficiency = 61kJ/2870kJ x 100% = 2%
10. Identify all redox reactions in glycolysis.
a. What is reduced in each of these reactions?
NAD+
b. What is oxidized?

11. Highlight where the atoms come from and/or go to in step 1, 3, 6, 7, 9, & 10.
12. Write the overall chemical equation for glycolysis.
Glucose + 2ATP + 4 ADP + 2Pi + 2NAD+ → 2
Pyruvate + 2 ADP + 4 ATP + 2 NADH + 2H2O
