Alcohol
 This drug is a depressant that slows down the body’s functions. When someone uses alcohol
they can have slurred speech, decreased judgment, decreased coordination, (knowing the
difference between right and wrong) and their vision is blurry.
 Some of the long-term effects of using alcohol are liver damage, heart disease, sores in the
stomach, and it damages brain cells.
 A can of beer, glass of wine, and a shot glass of liquor all contain the SAME amount of
alcohol because of the serving size.
Marijuana
 Marijuana comes from the hemp plant. Some long-term effects of using marijuana are
damage to the pituitary gland which causes problems with growth and development.
Marijuana can also damage lung tissue, emphysema, and lung cancer.
 This drug is smoked or eaten and has 400 chemicals. Some of the short-term effects of using
marijuana are loss of short-term memory, heart rate increases, lack of coordination, and
inability to think correctly.
Stimulants
 These drugs are addictive. Stimulants speed up all of the body’s functions. This drug speeds
up the heart rate, keeps a person awake, increases blood pressure, irritable, anxious and
death.
 Meth, Cocaine, Crack are examples of illegal stimulants. Caffeine is a legal stimulant.
Ecstasy
 Ecstasy is a club drug that causes a person to have a strong increase in body temperature
and causes kidney failure and teeth clenching. It changes parts of the brain that controls
memory, destroys brain cells and is deadly.
Ketamine
Is known as a date-rape drug and can cause hallucinations, memory loss, stop breathing,
deadly, etc. It is odorless, colorless and tasteless.
Rohypnol
Is known as a date-rape drug and causes a person’s blood pressure to drop, feel dizzy, have
blackouts, memory loss and become unconscious. It is colorless, odorless and tasteless.
Steroids
 Steroids are made from testosterone and come in pills, creams, and injections.
 Steroid use can cause liver tumors, acne, bad breath, heart attack, stroke, reproductive
problems, balding and aggressive behavior.
Cigarette Smoking
 Cigarette smoke has over 4,000 chemicals. Forty-six of those chemicals cause cancer.
Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and other types of cancer, heart disease, tooth decay,
wrinkles, gum disease, cavities, emphysema and addiction. Nicotine is the drug in tobacco
that makes it very addictive.
Chewing Tobacco
 Chewing tobacco is equally as dangerous as cigarette smoking. It has nicotine and can cause
cancer of the mouth, throat, voicebox, (and other places in the body), tooth decay, and loose
gums. It increases the heart rate and is very addictive. Leukoplakia is a white patch that can
occur inside the cheeks or gums and it is painless and is a warning sign cancer may occur.
