Success Criteria
Begin the lesson by asking chn to spell some words on their wbs. Sue to
support some with mnemonic cards. What do we use to help us spell
some of these words?
Explain LI. Talk partner time to discuss what it means.
Display other mnemonics. Allow the chn to look at them, read and
discuss. Showing the written phrase only ask children to spell word.
Did it help you to spell the word?
TP time to discuss what mnemonics are. Explain that a mnemonic helps
us to remember how to spell words or to remember the order of
something.
Previous learning. Ask children what we have been learning about. Space.
Children to name the planets. Can we think of a way that would help us
to remember the order of the planets? (Mnemonics)
Display a few examples and ask chn to read. (Explain about Pluto)
Using one of these phrases and ask a child to order the planets, others
to support.
Explain that we are going to have a go at writing our own mnemonic for

their work so far. Use another example on the IWB and
model again how to create a mnemonic.
Discuss spelling of words as we do so, bringing in phonic
knowledge. Children to discuss success criteria.

an interesting sentence.

This is quite a short session on a Monday. Today the student will begin
the lesson by talking about adjectives and what they are. Explain that
over the next few sessions we are going to do some descriptive writing
about our aliens and that adjectives will help to make our writing much
more interesting.
Display some sentences about aliens.
Chn to identify the adjective in each sentence and to say what it is
actually describing.
Display pictures of some alien faces and ask chn to talk-pair-share and
then write a descriptive sentence on their wb.
Take feed back and then model on the IWB encourage high level writing
and use of adjectives.

Main Teaching Content

Recap from previous lesson about the use of adjectives. Explain that we
are going to pretend that we are an alien and that we are going to
describe ourselves. Together think of some of the things we need to
include eg name, where we are from, what we look like etc.
Hand out to the chn their pictures of their aliens. Using some of the
headings listed, allow chn time to describe their alien with their partner
and then swap over. Remember to use the descriptive words from the
previous lesson. Share descriptions.
Show the chn a prepared description. Read together. Ask chn what they
like about this example and what they might like to include in their
writing.

I do a FUN activity with my kids using the five senses. I give each student a piece of writing paper and tell them we are going to write about
"Object X." They have to pretend they are aliens and want to send information back to their home planet about a new discovery: "Object X" (a
Hershey's kiss!).
1) we write about what it looks like first
2)then how it feels,
3)then we write about the sound(of the foil wrapper);
4)next we smell Object X
5)we use our sense of taste!!!! mmmm!

Display the spinner with different graphemes which relate to what they have been
learning in phonics. Ask chn to say the sounds and to think of some words that have
that sound in.
Recap on the meaning and use of adjectives and how they can make our writing a lot
more interesting .Display LI and ask a child to read.
Display different objects and allow the chn time to talk to their partners about what
these objects are and what they are used for. (Pair-share talk)
Explain that they are to pretend that they are aliens and that they have landed on
Earth and that they have discovered something strange that us Earthling use. Explain
that we are going to use our senses to describe them. (Pair-share talk)
Model labelling a picture using descriptive language.
Together work out the steps for learning.
