History Skills to be covered each year
 Understand the history of the UK as a
coherent, chronological narrative
 Understand how Britain has been influenced
and been influenced by the wider world.
 Deploy a historically grounded understanding
of abstract terms such as ‘empire’,
‘civilisation’ and ‘parliament’.
 Understand historical concepts such as
continuity and change, cause and
consequence, similarity, difference and
significance and use them to make
connections, draw contrasts and identify
trends over time.
 Create their own structured accounts
including written narratives.
 Understand the methods of historical
enquiry, including how evidence is used to
make historical claims.
 Address and sometimes devise historically
valid questions.
Geography skills to be covered each year
 Locate the world’s countries using maps to
focus on Europe and North and South
America, concentrating on environmental
regions, key physical and human
characteristics, countries and major cities.
 Name and locate countries and cities of the
UK, geographical regions and identifying
human and physical characteristics, key
topographical features and land use
patterns; understand how some of these
aspects have changed over time.
 The position and significance of latitude,
longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere,
Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer
and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle,
the Prime / Greenwich Meridian and time
zones.
 Use maps, atlases, globes and digital /
computer mapping to locate countries and
describe features studied.
 Use the eight points of a compass, four and
six-figure grid references, symbols and key
(including OS maps)
 Use fieldwork to observe, measure and
record and present the human and physical
features in the local area using a range of
methods, including sketch maps, plans and
graphs, and digital technologies.
