Master List of First Grade Decodable Words
1st Nine Weeks
Dad sits and naps.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The attached list is our master list of decodable words
for the first nine weeks. Decodable words are words which
can be “sounded out” letter-by-letter and blended into a
word.
Each Friday, we will send home individual lists of words
that will be introduced during the upcoming week.
Throughout that week, we will learn and practice sounding
out and blending these words. Every Friday, we will have a
word test where students will come to the teacher’s desk
and read each word as we point to it. This will help us
know how well your child can sound out and blend words.
Their decodable words will also be their spelling words.
Each week when we are working on a certain set of letter
sounds, students will not only read the decodable words but

also spell them on paper. Spelling tests will begin on the
1st full week of school. We will send a note home reminding
parents at that time.
Please keep your master list in a safe place, so that if
you misplace the words we send home weekly, you will still
have a master copy to help your child study.
Happy Reading,
First Grade Teachers
