Unit 1
Chapter 3
Lesson 1
The Cell Theory
Cell
 A cell is the basic unit of structure of all
living things
– It is the smallest unit in which life process can
be carried out
The Microscope
 Dutch lens makers Hans and Zacharias
Jannsen are credited with in inventing the
microscope sometime between 1590-1610
 Robert Hooke first to see cells with
microscope in 1665
– He looked at tree cork
– Named cells after empty rooms monks live in
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
 Discovered many microorganisms in a
single drop of water
 He was blessed with great eyesight and was
a skilled lens maker
Other Microscope People
 Matthias Schleiden- Discovered plants were
made of cells also
 Robert Brown- Discovered the nucleus
 Theodore Shwann- Discovered animal
tissues were made of cells
 Rudolf Virchow- concluded cells arise from
pre-existing cells
Cell Theory
 3 Points
– All living things are composed of one or more
cells
– A cell is the basic unit of life in all cells
– All cells come from other cells
Think Back
 What is a cell?
– A cell is the basic unit of structure of all living
things
Think Back
 How does God maintain the Earth to help
cells thrive?
– God placed the Earth just the right distance
from the sun to create the right temperature.
– He designed Earth to hold water.
– He formed Earth with an atmosphere, which
allows living things to breathe and allows
sunlight to hit the Earth
Think Back
 What is Cell Theory?
– All living things are composed of one or more
cells, all chemical reactions of a living thing
occurs in its cells, and all cells come from other
cells
Think Back
 Name contributions that three scientists
made to our knowledge of cells.
