Heat and Chemical Energy
During the video.
1. Heat can unleash chemical energy; and chemical energy can unleash heat.
2. Atoms are the tiny units that bond together into molecules-the building
blocks of all matter.
3. Atoms are vibrating constantly with kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the
energy of movement.
4. The atoms making up an object are always moving, even if the object
seems to be completely still.
5. As atoms vibrate faster, they increase the heat energy. In addition, as
they vibrate faster, they get farther apart and the material expands.
6. Temperature is NOT the same thing as heat. Heat is a form of energy.
Temperature is a measurement of how fast atoms and molecules are
moving.
7. Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius (ºC) and 32 degrees Fahrenheit (ºF).
8. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius and 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
9. Zero degrees Kelvin (ºK) is known as absolute zero. That is the coldest
possible temperature and the atoms are completely still. No one has ever
found absolute zero!
10.When you feel cold, it is because something is draining heat from you.
Heat energy always flows from hot to cold.
11.Heat is transferred by convection, conduction, and radiation.
12.Warm fluid is less dense than cold fluid. That means that the molecules
in the warm fluid are spread out farther than the molecules in the cold
fluid. This makes the warm fluid lighter than the denser cold fluid.
Therefore, the warm fluid rises above the cold fluid. This is convection.

13.Convection is important to the weather patterns on earth. As air masses
on earth are heated by the sun, they expand and rise in the atmosphere.
They then push cooler air aside. Next, the air mass cools and falls back
to the surface of the earth.
14.Convection works well with liquids and gasses, but to get a solid to
transfer heat, you need conduction.
15.Conduction is the way heat moves through objects that are touching.
Conductors conduct heat much better than insulators.
16.Radiation is how heat energy moves in waves through space from the sun
to the earth.
17.Plants use the energy from the sun to make starches and sugars. This
process is called photosynthesis.
18.Digesting food releases chemical energy and produces body heat. The
energy contained in food is measured in calories.
19.A calorie is defined as the amount of heat energy used to raise one gram
of water one degree Celsius. 1 kilocalorie = 1000 calories. The Calories
listed on food is actually kilocalories and is written with a capital C.
20.Our modern world depends on fossil fuels. Coal, oil, and natural gas are
fossil fuels. The energy in fossil fuels was stored before the dinosaurs.
