Design
● Carries the major ideas conveyed by the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America:
“We
the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the
common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and
establish this Constitution for the United States of America”

The scale on the front held by the woman represents "Justice"
The olive branch imprint all around the rim of the coin represents "domestic Tranquility"
The shield on the front symbolizes "the common defense"
The Latin phrase on the front "PRO POPULUS" speaks for the "general Welfare" and the "LIBERTY" is
meant to emphasize “the Blessings of Liberty”
On the reverse side of coin is the flag of the United States of America and the last two lines of the national
anthem, both additional displays of patriotism
Materials
● Cupronickel (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper)
● Nordic Gold (89% copper, 5% aluminum, 5% zinc, 1% tin)
Physical Properties
● Malleable and ductile, making the metals easier to mold into the desired shapes and not to break or crumble

Luster and what would be considered good coloring
○ The cupronickel is a shiny silver
○ Nordic gold is a bright golden, closely resembling real gold in coloring even though it contains
none and is much less expensive
Extremely high melting temperatures (both over 1000 degrees Celsius), so there is no possibility of the coin
melting in hot weather
Chemical Properties
● Cupronickel and Nordic Gold are resistant to corrosion, including seawater corrosion
● Both alloys are also resistant to tarnishing and to bio-fouling
● Nordic gold is hypoallergenic
Cost Analysis and Other Information
● It costs about 10 cents to manufacture one coin
● High concentrations of copper were chosen because the price of copper remains relatively the same, unlike

the skyrocketing prices of silver and gold
Decided to buy our materials from companies that were geographically close and had good trade relations
with the U.S. i.e. copper from Baja Mining Corporation in Mexico
○ The U.S. has strong trade relations with Mexico; lower transport costs of materials because of
Mexico’s proximity to the U.S.
Coins that are “uncurrent” and mutilated are received by the U.S. Mint (“uncurrent” coins are first taken in
by the Federal Reserve Banks), melted, and metal is shipped to a fabricator to be used in manufacture of
coinage strips
