SYLLABUS FOR PHY 662 Quantum Mechanics II
We will continue the study of QM by applying the
formalism to real world situations. This will involve using
various approximations. The best way to acquire the
necessary skills is to do problems so there will be many
HW problems. HWs are due the Tuesday after they are
assigned. DO THEM and as many other problems from the
book as you can.
Text: Principles of Quantum Mechanics 2nd Edition by
R. Shankar. There are many other good books available. I
also like Sakurai Modern QM
Office hours: Wed. 4-5, Thur. 5-6.
Grading: There will be 3 exams and a final. The final will
count as 2 exams. HW will also count as 2 exams and I will
drop your lowest exam (or HW grade).
Topics to be covered: Identical Particles, Semiclassical
approximation, variational methods, both time independent
and time dependent perturbation theory, scattering theory
and if time permits many body physics, the Dirac Equation
and advanced topics in path integration..
