By the end of the first 3 wks (Health/Wellness/Body Systems)
The student:
•
will be able to list at least five major health issues we face today
•
will list the risk factors involved in the major issues
•
will be able to identify 10 life skills that will help them lead a healthy life
•
will be able to list the four components involved with self esteem
•
will be able to identify how self esteem develops and how to improve it
•
will be able to learn the characteristics of good mental health and how to manage
their emotions
•
will learn about mental disorders and the different types of treatment for mental
disorders

Will be able to take a written exam and show at least 90% accuracy.
By the end of the second 3 wks (Fitness/Nutrition/Weight Management)
The student:
•
will be able to list at least 6 benefits to being physically fit
•
will be able to show how to measure his/her physical and wellness level
•
Will be able to name 5 ways to measure body composition and participate in at
least 2 body composition evaluations.
•
will cover nutrition (six classes of nutrients and their functions)
•
will demonstrate his/her knowledge by creating a balanced, nutritious menu
•
will develop an exercise program that will include a healthy diet plan that is safe
for his/her individual needs
•
will be able to list factors that affect body weight, unsafe weight-control practices
and list at least 5 tips for a healthy weight management program
•
Will be able to take a written exam and show at least 90% accuracy.

By the end of the third 3 wks (Mental Health/Tobacco, Alcohol,
Drugs
The student:
•
will learn and be able to identify what makes a drug a medicine
•
will learn and be able to list why certain drugs are classified as drugs of abuse
•
will learn the risks of misusing medicines and why certain medicines and drugs are addictive
and how addiction can be avoided and treated
•
will learn how alcohol use and abuse affects the individual, family and society
•
will learn about support groups and aid available to individuals with the disease alcoholism
•
will learn about the dangers associated with tobacco-long and short
•
will learn about the benefits of living a tobacco-free life
•
Will be able to take a written exam and show at least 80% accuracy.
By the end of the fourth 3 wks (Human Development/Family, Human
Reproduction)
The student:
•
Will learn and be able to identify and recognize the importance of the male and
female reproductive structures
•
Will learn and be able to list the signs and symptoms of problems for both the
male and female reproductive system
•
Will learn and be able to list ways to keep the reproductive systems healthy
•
Will learn about pregnancy and early child development
•
Will learn and be able to list at least 5 problems that could occur during
Pregnancy
•
Will learn the benefits of sexual abstinence
•
Will learn about how to cope with the risk factors involved in being sexually
active
•
Will learn how to identify risk factors that can cause teens to become sexually
active and protective factors that help teens remain abstinent
•
Will learn about the causes, transmission, symptoms, treatments, and prevention
of sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV and AIDS
•
Will learn about the physical, mental, emotional, social and financial changes that
occur during adolescence and adulthood
•
Will learn ways to communicate effectively, maintain healthy relationships, and
maintain wellness
•
Will learn about marriage, including responsibilities of married partners, factors
that contribute to successful marriages and challenges faced by married teens

Will learn about different types of families and characteristics of healthy families

By the end of the fifth 3 wks (Medicines/Diseases)
The student:
• Will be able to list two bacterial diseases and their causes
•
Will learn how to name the treatment for two specific diseases
•
Will learn about how to treat specific diseases, how the body naturally protects
itself from disease, and how to avoid and prevent illness
•
Will learn and be able to list at least 5 common infectious diseases along with
signs, symptoms and treatment for each
•
Will learn and list at least 3 types of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and
diabetes
•
Will learn and be able to differentiate between controllable and uncontrollable
risk factors for lifestyle disease
•
Will be able to name and describe 3 hereditary diseases, 3 immune and
autoimmune diseases
•
Will learn and demonstrate 2 ways people with disabilities can cope
•
Will research a hereditary disorder that is not discussed in this chapter, for
example achondroplasia, Kleinfeltersyndrome and Marfan syndrome, create a
fact sheet about the disease and post and report to the class
•
Will be able to take a written exam and show at least 80% accuracy.
By the end of the sixth 3 wks (CPR & 1st. Aid)
The student:
• Will have the opportunity to be certified in Cardiovascular Resuscitation and 1st.
Aid
• Will learn and be able to recognize an emergency situation
• Will learn and be able to list the 9 steps to take when he/she encounters a medical
emergency
• Will learn and demonstrate the ABC’s (airway, breathing and cardio)of lifethreatening conditions with 100% accuracy
•
Will learn and demonstrate the proper use of the AED (Automated External
Defibrillators) with 100% accuracy
•
Will learn and demonstrate rescue breathing on adult, child and infant(using a
mannequin) with a 100% accuracy
•
Will learn and be able to list 5 reasons why someone might be in a position to
need rescue breathing
•
Will learn and be able to demonstrate his/her skills in performing CPR on adult,
child and infant
•
Will learn and be able to list 4 causes of heart related problems
•
Will learn and be able to demonstrate abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver), on
a mannequin for adult, child and infant with 100% accuracy
•
Will learn and be able to identify 6 different kinds of wounds along with the 1st.
aid treatment for each
•
Will learn about heat and cold related emergencies along with signs, symptoms
and treatment for each
•
Will learn and demonstrate how to recognize and treat a bone, joint, or muscle
injury with 100% accuracy
•
Will learn how to recognize burns and how to give proper, immediate treatment
•
Will learn how to identify different poisons substances that are around most
people every day, from plants, chemicals, etc.
•
Will learn how to treat any poison situation
•
Will take a written exam and demonstrate knowledge of CPR and 1st. Aid with
80% accuracy
