Abstract
This study deals with the wood anatomy of six species of Ficus L. (Moraceae) from Mérida city (Venezuela): F. benjamina, F.
elastica, F. insipida, F. maitin, F. tonduzii and F. velutina. Description of wood is presented according to IAWA Committee (1989).
The xylem resulted remarkably homogeneous in these six species; only the presence of crystals allowed to separate them in two
groups: those with crystal inclusions (F. benjamina, F. insipida, F. maitin, F. velutina) and those lacking of crystals (F. elastica, F.
tonduzii). Perforated ray cells (F. tonduzii) and sheath cells (F. elastica, F. velutina) were also observed. Laticifers tubes are
another common feature of these species. The marked homogeneity among species made it impossible to conceive a dichotomous
key.
