>>> uofmb transport The Warming of the North: Implications for Arctic Transportation, Supply Chain Management and Economic Development C ountries like Canada face numerous challenges and opportunities as climate change opens access to northern regions. Climate change can bring increased passenger and cargo traffic into the Arctic, which in turn can spur significant economic development. That development will itself raise critical operational and policy issues, necessitating targeted (and sometimes timely) responses from industries, national governments, and local communities. Many of these issues are transport and supply chainrelated, requiring the development of new infrastructure and effective and innovative approaches to management, regulations and governance. The University of Manitoba Transport Institute and the Department of Supply Chain Management at the University of Manitoba are pleased to be hosting Warming of the North: Implications for Arctic Transportation, Supply Chain Management, and Economic Development from 1 - 3 March 2015 in Ottawa. Setting aside the question of mitigation of climate change, the conference will examine climate change in relation to economic development (including resource extraction), tourism, the movement of goods into and out of Arctic communities, traffic between Europe and Asia, and traffic to and from North America via Arctic waters. Accordingly, the conference will focus on the transport-related economic, commercial, management, and policy implications of the warming of the North. It will explore the impacts of climate change on the private, public, and non-profit sectors, examining how increased commercial activity will require all sectors to adapt their supply chains for the changing climate in the northern regions. Speakers scheduled to appear at the conference include Mr. Terry Audla (Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami), Mr. Aqqulak Lynge (former chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council) and Mr. Ovide Mercredi. Academics speaking at the conference include Professors David Barber and Barry Prentice (University of Manitoba), John Higginbotham (Carleton University), and Jackie Dawson (University of Ottawa).
