World History II
escription: In this course we will be covering a wide span of
history with many varying themes and an assortment of different
contents. In one semester we will be trying to cover information
from the middle ages and the reigns of absolute rulers in Europe, to
current events and a time period of greater global interdependence. This amount of information,
covering such a large time span, will hopefully give you a greater understanding of the
complexity of history and the changing nature of our world. This course will focus upon the
global perspective and study how the history of the world becomes more and more
interconnected as we get closer to modern times. Many of the events that are covered in this
course have had a large impact upon the world that we know today and have greatly helped
shape current events.
This course will cover the Renaissance, Reformation and Catholic Reformation, the rise of the
European nation states, European overseas exploration and settlement, the Enlightenment,
transformations in India, China and Japan, the Ottoman Empire, revolutions, growth of industrial
economies, imperialism, the world wars, independence movements, the cold war, conflicts in
Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, pollution, and problems confronting the present-day world
community. Overall we will be studying how the world has developed into the modern era that
we live in.
Skills: In this class you will be developing your historical thinking skills by studying
chronological thinking, historical comprehension, and historical analysis through various
research projects that challenge you to examine various historical issues. While looking at
history you read, think about what you have read, and write about what you have read.
Throughout the year you will improve your writing skills by practicing both expository and
persuasive writing.
Within this course you will develop your skills in order to become a more comprehensive
historical thinker who can examine primary and secondary sources in order to more fully
understand the time period being studied. As a historian you will need to develop an analytical
approach to studying history and avoid judging past events within the framework of modern
values and expectations.
Requirements – In this class you will be completing a number of assignments which will
determine your grade for the semester. There will be a number of quizzes focusing on your
homework and discussions that we have had in class. You are also required to complete a
number of major assignments that will include written papers and presentations.
Grading Policy – Students will be graded on the following criteria:
20% Class Participation/ Classwork/ Homework
Class Participation: This will include substantive participation in class discussions and
activities. Also, you will be expected to maintain a class binder that will include a section
for class notes, reflective writing assignments and class handouts. This notebook will be
collected throughout the year and graded for its thoroughness as part of your class
participation grade.
Homework: Homework will be given through unit syllabi so that students know their
assignments ahead of time and can keep track of the information that we are covering.
Homework is due the day after it has been assigned. If you are absent you have one day
to turn in the missed assignment or you must see me to determine a reasonable amount of
time for your assignment to be due. It is your responsibility to come see me regarding
missed assignments. For every day that a major project is late you will lose 10 points off
the final grade. If you know you are going to be absent please come see me to create a
schedule for making up work.
40% Major Essays / Presentations
Throughout the year you will be assigned several major writing assignments for which
you will be given class time to research, organize, write and edit. These assignments are
extremely important to complete and turn in on-time. For everyday that a major
assignment is late I will deduct a full letter grade from your possible score.
40% Quizzes and Tests
Quizzes will be given periodically throughout the unit and are typically based on your
readings and homework. Unit Tests will cover a broader range of information, usually a
time period or theme of history.
Your Final Grade is determined as follows: each quarter is 20% of your grade with the MidTerm and Final combining for the last 20%. Mid-Term / Final: Each of these Tests will be 10%
of your final grade for this course. The Mid-Term will cover all the information in the first
semester of the year and the Final will cover all of the information for the second semester.
Supplies – Class Notebook (class binder will area for class notes, short reflective writing
assignments, and class handouts), writing utensils, a covered textbook, and a flashdrive.
Attendance – (Refer to the Student Handbook for the full attendance policy) Please be on time and
prepared for class. Tardiness will not be accepted and it is important not to miss class.
Cheating and Honor Code – (Refer to the Student Handbook for full policy) Plagiarism is unacceptable
and any violation of the honor code will be persecuted. Plagiarism is both the intentional and the
unintentional use of another’s ideas, words, phrases, metaphors, and structures without giving
proper credit. This makes plagiarism a question of fact not intent. To avoid plagiarism make sure
that you take careful notes during the writing/ research process and develop a habit of identifying
(or citing) the authors/ sources that you are indebted to.
