Week 2 class notes
Importance of Water: example of floating ice
Cells:2 types, prokaryotic and eukaryotic- what are the differences
What structures would you find in each type of cell?
What is a “membrane bound organelle”? name them
What types of organisms have cell walls, and which don’t?
Cell membrane: structure (phospholipid bilayer – transmembrane proteins);
-cellular transport: how things move in and out of cells: passive diffusion, facilitated diffusion, active
transport, and endocytosis.
-cellular communication and signaling (receptor or signal proteins imbedded in the membrane). Cell to
cell recognition, signal translation.
Energy: Chemical energy and the sun as source of all earth energy (except atomic).
ATP as the rechargeable batteries of a cell, used for all functions
Cellular respiration: converting chemical energy of sugars into ATP
Photosynthesis: converting CO2 and H2O into sugars using the energy of sunlight
Chemistry catch-up (lecture after the quiz)
Anatomy of an atom, why atoms form bonds with other atoms to make molecules. Why carbon is so
good at making the kinds of macromolecules that life is based on.
Types of bonds: Covalent (electron sharing), ionic (electron taking), hydrogen bonding (polarity-based,
electrons not shared).
