News Briefs Instructions
Biology 212
Students will be reading and preparing summaries of current newspaper or journal articles and
discussing them in small groups. Each student will be a presenter once during the quarter. The
articles should be current, within the last month of your presentation date.
Presenters will:
• Find two (2) newspaper stories or journal articles on topics relevant to the class.
• Write a brief summary of the articles to be turned in.
• Describe the article that you read to your group and lead a discussion on the sources used,
how the science was conveyed and relevance to the class or to your lives or other points of
interest.
Summary should be typed and include:
• Citation, including name of author, name of publication and publication date. Also include a
complete web link if you found your source online.
• 3 -4 sentence summary of article.
• Why did you choose this article (what about it interested you)?
• What sources of information did the author use to write the article (e.g., if a news story on a
new cure for cancer, did they interview scientists? patients? company marketing the drug?
were they describing a scientific paper?) and what do you think about those sources?
• How well do you think the scientific information was conveyed in the article?
• What is the relevance of the article to your life?
Note: I do not need a copy of the article.
