The way geographers view the world… (LOCATION, PLACE, REGION, MOVEMENT, AND HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION) 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY LOCATION The exact or relative spot of something on earth. Every point on Earth has a location. Absolute location Relative location Absolute Location : Exact coordinates using latitude and longitude. Latitude – Imaginary lines drawn from east to west, measuring north and south of the equator. Longitude – Imaginary lines drawn north to south, measuring east and west of the prime meridian. Relative Location : the location of a place based on its position to another place. Example: a place is N,E,S,W of another place Looking at the World through Location How does each of these images show the theme of Location? Place The study of physical features and human characteristics of a place Examples: Physical: landforms, rivers, lakes, climate, soil, etc. Human Characteristics: religious beliefs, settlement patterns, languages, etc. PLACE The physical and human features of a location Physical Features Human Features • Things that occur naturally • Mountains, rivers, forests, climates, etc. • Things that people bring to a location. • Culture, buildings, monuments, etc. Examples of Place Physical Features The Rocky Mountains run through the western United States and north into Canada. The Tennessee River and the Duck River meet around Kentucky Lake. Human Features The majority of people in China speak Mandarin Chinese. The Statue of Liberty is a monument found in New York and is a symbol of freedom. Looking at the World through Place How does each of these images show the theme of Place? REGIONS • Geographers divide the world into regions. • Division of the world into Physical Regions and Cultural Regions Physical Regions: Deserts, rainforests, tidal basins. Cultural Regions: Islam and the Bible Belt Looking At The World Through Regions How does each of these images show the theme of Regions? HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION How humans adapt to and modify the environment. Humans shape the landscape through their interaction with the land. Examples: farming, cutting trees, and building canals. Examples of HumanEnvironment Interaction Humans adapting to their environment: We wear heavy coats to protect us from the cold winters. We run air conditioners in the summers. We prepare for weather emergencies depending on where we livehurricanes, blizzards, tornados, etc. Humans changing their environment: People build bridges to cross over water features. We farm fertile land to provide us with food to eat. Looking at the World through HumanEnvironment Interaction How does each of these images show the theme of HumanEnvironment Interaction? MOVEMENT Movement of goods, ideas and people. . People & Things Move: People and animals travel and migrate, countries import and export goods Information & Ideas Move: We communicate information and ideas in a variety of formats- television, computers, newspapers, etc. MOVEMENT Movement of goods, ideas and people. . Oranges grown in Florida are shipped to other states because other climates do not allow oranges to grow. Information and Ideas Move: People text each other to communicate quickly. People get news from television, newspapers, the radio, and the Internet. Looking at the World through Movement How does each of these images show the theme of Movement?
