Ancient Rome
Written and Illustrated by Phillip Martin
Ancient Rome
The twins Romulus and Remus were raised by
a wolf. As the story goes, they founded Rome
in 753 BC. The first king was Romulus.
By 117 AD, the
Roman Empire
included all of
Italy and the
Mediterranean
coast, even
stretching on
as far as
Great
Britain.
Ancient Rome
The Roman Republic was
ruled by a Senate. The
name meant “old man”
and was an assembly of
the city elders.
Later emperors took over
the leadership. As the
emperors grew more
powerful, the Senate had
less and less influence.
Ancient Rome
The Romans architects built roads, temples,
arenas and even aqueducts, to transport
water for their public baths and toilets.
Ancient Rome
The Colosseum
took about 10 years
construct. The
name means
“giant statue”,
a nickname since
a huge statue of
Nero was nearby.
Roman architects designed a sun roof that
could be stretched over the Colosseum to
protect the spectators from the sun and heat.
Ancient Rome
By the early fourth century, Romans roads
stretched over a network of 53,000 miles.
Ancient Rome
The Ancient Romans are
remembered for many more
contributions including
concrete, newspapers,
welfare, arches, the Julian
calendar, Roman numerals
as well as the root of the
Romance languages of
French, Italian, Spanish,
Portuguese and Romanian.
Ancient Rome
Hannibal attempted to invade Rome in 218 BC
by crossing the Alps on elephants. It took the
Romans seventeen years to defeat him.
Ancient Rome
The Roman Empire ruled
over much of Europe for
almost a thousand years.
Eventually, the empire split
in two. The Western Roman
Empire fell in 476 AD.
The Eastern (Byzantine)
Empire lasted another 1000
years in parts of eastern
Europe.
Ancient Rome
The Romans had many gods and goddesses.
There were hundreds of them! To learn about
some of the main gods, visit this presentation
