Moving Away from the Family As we get older, we rely less and less on our parents and family. In other words, we grow independent. We get jobs and pay for our own clothes and food. We eventually get licenses and drive ourselves places. Our time shifts from focusing on family to focusing on friends and relationships. First Serious Relationship The first time we get a “crush” on someone, it is a weird thing. Girls will ask Mom for advice, boys will ask dad. Psychologists: Love is a set of chemical reactions. Sociologists: Human invention that helps families and societies stay close. Anthropologists: Not needed for marriage or families. A lot of the time, these relationships mean moving away (physically or emotionally) from your parents and family for the first time. In movies, this type of relationship usually leads to the losing of one’s virginity. -A very important rite of passage for different cultures. Gender Issues Men and Women are viewed as having very different roles when it comes to sexuality. Men are seen as being slaves of high sex-drives, women are seen as being the ones who control this behaviour. Of course, these rules are not always the case. There are very romantic men, just like there can be women with sex-drives “like a man.” Three theories 1. Physically, men create a lot more testosterone, a chemical hormone that drives sexual thoughts and actions. 2. Men want to reproduce as much as possible to keep their bloodline intact, women only create 1 egg a month and need to be selective. 3. Socially, these views are reinforced by media and other cultural sterotypes. Dating When dating starts happening, PARENTS FREAK OUT. Especially when it comes to daughters. Various cultures have very different rules and norms about dating (who can date, when, how long, age). Western culture has changed over the past 50 years. Dating: Do’s and Dont’s First Sexual Experience When asked about why this decision was made, these are some common answers: -Want to feel accepted -It feels good -It is easier to have sex than to talk about it or say no -They want to feel close to someone -Peer Pressure -Love -Experimentation -Raging hormones Page 139 # 1-4 The LANGUAGE OF THE HANDKERCHIEF In the 1800s, the Victorian era, society was very conservative. Across the lips: Across the eyes: Dropping: Across the cheek: Twirling it (right hand): Across the forehead: Winding around finger Online Dating 100 years ago, we were writing letters to members of the opposite sex that we wanted to court. This has replaced that idea. Why is online dating so readily adopted now? Benefits of Online Dating 1. You can create an image for yourself. -Put only the information up that you want people to see. -Set filters for who can see what. 2. You can look for a certain type. 3. Automatic matchmaking software. 4. You can start/stop talking at anytime. Others? Risks of Online Dating 1. Bullying 2. Harassment 3. Creeps or stalkers. Page 143 #1-5
