EQ: What was the War of 1812?
What were the major causes and
effects of the war?
America vs. Britain
British sailors were capturing
American sailors and making them
work on the British ships.
Take some notes!
CAUSE:
The Brits kidnapped the American sailors and
forced them to work on the British ships and join
their Navy.

*Our goal was to take over Canada, where a lot of Brits were living, and make it a state
of the United States. Too bad it didn’t work out. The British troops were stronger than
we thought and battled us back out of Canada.
War Hawks
• The War Hawks were members of Congress who put
pressure on President James Madison to declare war
against Britain in 1812.
• The War Hawks tended to be from southern and western
states, and were prompted by expansionist tendencies,
in particular the desire to add Canada and Florida to the
territory of the United States.
THIS MEANS WAR!
Take some notes!
CAUSE:
Since British troops kept battling Americans
back out of Canada, the Americans
decided to fight on the ocean.
EFFECT:

Britain’s best warship.
The U.S. may not be great at fighting on
land but we are awesome at battling on the
water!

burn the city, including the White House.

The Star Spangled Banner by
Francis Scott Key
Oh, say, can you see, by the
dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the
twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright
stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd,
were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the
bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our
flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled
banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the
home of the brave?
Take some notes!
CAUSE:
The British attack the America’s Fort
McHenry.
EFFECT:
The Brits lose! America stand strong
and win the battle at Fort McHenry.
