BLOOD AND
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
What is the function of
the Circulatory System?



Takes oxygen from the lungs and
moves the oxygen throughout the
body. (cells)
Removes carbon dioxide from the
body.
Circulates nutrients from the digestive
system to parts of the body.
What is Blood Made of?
RED BLOOD CELLS
Carries oxygen
to all cells in the
body
WHITE BLOOD
CELLS
They are the body´s
“soldiers” and they
attack germs to
protects us.
HOW DOES BLOOD
WORK
When you cut yourself
White Blood cells (soldiers)
move where the germs are and
destroy them.
Platelets make a web
to close the hole made
by the cut.
What are the 2 parts of
the Circulatory System?
HEART
BLOOD VESSELS
1.Arteries
2.Veins
3.Capillaries
What does the heart do?


About the size of clenched fist.
A very powerful muscle (cardiac
muscle) that pumps blood
through its chambers to all parts
of the body by cycles of
contracting and relaxing.
What do Arteries do?
ARTERIES:
carries blood
AWAY from the
heart
What do Veins do?
VEINS:
carries blood
BACK to the
heart
What do Capillaries do?
CAPILLARIES:
CONNECTS arteries
to veins, this is
where the exchange
of oxygen and carbon
dioxide happens
VEINS
Capillaries
ARTERIES
How do nutrients get
into the blood?
•Digested nutrients are absorbed
through intestinal walls
•Absorbed materials cross the cell
membranes into the blood vessels
•Digestive + Circulatory Systems
LET´S REMEMBER!!
1. What is the function of the Circulatory System?
Supplies oxygen and takes away carbon dioxide in
the body AND circulates nutrients
2. What are the parts of the blood?
red blood cells, white blood cells
3. What is the function of the red blood cells?
They carry oxygen to all parts of the body.
4. List the types of blood vessels.
Arteries – Veins - Capillaries
5. What is the name of the organ that pumps blood?
HEART
6. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs in:
ARTERIES
VEINS
CAPILLARIES
Fun Facts:



Your heart pumps about 4,000
gallons of blood each day.
An average human’s heart beats
30 million times per year.
The sound of the heartbeat is
created by the valves of the heart
closing as they push blood
through its chambers.
