The Civil War ends and the repairing
of America begins.
The Union victory in the Civil War
resulted in a devastated and destroyed
southern way of life. The SOUTH was in
need of repair.
The next twelve years in America were
called Reconstruction.
DURING THIS TIME, SOME NORTHERNERS
DECIDED TO MOVE SOUTH TO HELP.
THE SOUTHERNERS SAW THEM AS
OPPORTUNISTS AND CALLED THEM
CARPETBAGGERS
ALSO DURING THIS TIME, THERE WERE
SOUTHERNERS WHO CHANGED THEIR
VIEWS AND BEGAN TO SUPPORT THE
NORTHERNERS.
THEY WERE SEEN AS TRAITORS AND
CALLED
SCALAWAGS
Less than a week after the
Civil War ended, President
Lincoln was assassinated by
John Wilkes Booth, a white
southerner, who opposed
Lincoln’s political policies.
Vice
President
Andrew
Johnson
became the
new
President.
THE FIRST ORDER OF
BUSINESS FOR THE
NEW PRESIDENT WAS
TO “OFFICIALLY” END
SLAVERY.
FREED SLAVES
EVERYWHERE IN
THE UNITED
STATES FOREVER.
NOW THAT THEY
WERE FREE, WHERE
DID SLAVES GO ?
MOST SLAVES
STAYED IN THE
SOUTH .
In fact …
THE MAJORITY OF
BLACKS TO THIS
VERY DAY ARE
STILL LOCATED IN
THE SOUTH .
WHAT DO YOU DO
NOW?
HOW DO YOU LIVE?
WHAT DO YOU NEED
TO SURVIVE?
General Sherman
from the Union
Army proposed
an idea to provide
freed slaves with
40 acres and a
mule to help them
become
productive and
independent.
Film producer,
director and
writer Spike Lee
named his
production
company 40
Acres and a
Mule.
The federal
government
also stepped
into to provide
assistance to
needy Black
families.
A government
agency set up to give
AFRICAN AMERICANS help with:




FOOD
CLOTHING
MEDICAL SERVICES
SCHOOLS
SIMILAR TO FAMILIES
TODAY WHO
RECEIVE WIC.
The SOUTH
was very
much
OPPOSED
TO IT .
President
Johnson vetoed
the Freedmen’s
Bureau bills
twice and
rejected the
offer of giving
Blacks 40 acres
and a mule.
MAJOR SUPPORTER OF
STATES RIGHTS.
AGAINST ABUSE OF
GOVERNMENT.
Did not want to further
upset the southerners
The South was free to pass laws to
keep Blacks under control.
They passed laws called BLACK
CODES
CANNOT OWN
PROPERTY
CAN NOT MARRY A
WHITE PERSON.
COULD NOT OWN
GUNS
MUST SIGN A LABOR
CONTRACT FOR A
YEAR.
COULD NOT TESTIFY
IN COURT AGAINST A
WHITE PERSON
CAN NOT ASSEMBLE
UNLESS 1 WHITE
PERSON WAS THERE
Congress overrode President
Johnson’s veto and passed two
very important amendments to
give African Americans rights
they never had.
Granted full
citizenship to ALL
people regardless of
color if they were
born in the United
States.
This overturned the
previous and
infamous Dred Scott
decision.
Granted ALL
Black Men the
RIGHT TO
VOTE!!!
SOUTHERN STATES exercised their
rights and found different ways to
keep Blacks from voting:
WHAT WERE THEY……..?
Black men were
given the right to
vote ONLY if
they could prove
that their
grandfather was
able to vote
before the Civil
War.
Black men
were able to
vote only if
they could
pay a fee at
the poll.
Black men were
given the right to
vote ONLY if
they could pass a
test that required
them to know
specific
information about
the government.
Take the Literacy Test to see if you would be
allowed to vote.
Formed in Tennessee,
groups of White men
(in many cases,
undercover
policemen), used
violence and scare
tactics to keep Blacks
from going to the
polls to vote.
The KKK would visit the Black leaders and
prominent people of the community before
elections to send the message that trying to
organize Blacks would result in violence and
in many cases DEATH.
The KKK is still active
today but they aren’t as
large as before and they
aren’t as active either.
WHY DO YOU THINK SO?
Teachable Moment
The KKK
“allegedly” wrote
a letter to Black
gang members
years ago,
thanking them for
the killing and
slaughter of one
another. Let’s
examine it.
States are still creating ways to prevent
Blacks from voting.
1. REDUCING HOURS to do EARLY VOTING
2. MANDATORY VOTER ID LAWS
3. VOTING MACHINE TAMPERING
Despite the tactics to keep
Blacks from voting, they STILL
would not be denied.
The first
African
American to
serve as a
governor in the
United States.
(LOUISIANA)
The first African
American to
serve in the
House of
Representatives
(South Carolina)
The first
African
American to
become a
Senator in the
United States
Congress.
(Mississippi)
Teachable Moment
HOW MANY
CURRENT
MEMBERS OF
THE SENATE
ARE BLACK ?
OUT OF A
TOTAL 100
HOW MANY
CURRENT
MEMBERS OF
THE HOUSE
ARE BLACK ?
OUT OF A
TOTAL OF 435



The ONLY African
American
Representative from
North Carolina.
Yes he’s Black – lol.
Both of his parents
were MIXED.
SINCE AFRICAN AMERICANS ARE UNDERREPRESENTED IN CONGRESS, THEY HAVE
DEVELOPED THEIR OWN GROUP THAT IS
MADE UP OF ONLY BLACK MEMBERS.
THE GROUP IS MADE UP OF BOTH
DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS
IS NOT A
MEMBER OF
THE
CONGRESSIONAL
BLACK CAUCUS
Why do you think
African
Americans are not
into politics, laws,
and government
as much as they
are into sports
and
entertainment.
