Specific Learning Disability
• Specific learning disability means a disorder in
one or more of the basic psychological
processes involved in understanding or in using
language, spoken or written,
– that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen,
think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical
calculations,
– including conditions as perceptual handicaps, brain
injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and
developmental aphasia.

• The term does not include learning
problems that are primarily the result of
visual, hearing, motor handicaps, mental
retardation, emotional disturbance,
environmental, cultural, or economic
disadvantage (U. S. Department of
Education, 1999).

•
A discrepancy between expected and actual
achievement
• ….in one or more areas as noted in the
definition: speaking, writing, thinking, spelling,
reading, listening, and mathematics.
•
A learning disability is not primarily the result
of sensory, motor, intellectual, or emotional
handicap, poor teaching, cultural difference, or
the lack of opportunity to learn.
It is associated with language processes.

Intellectual Disability
• Intellectual disability refers to substantial
limitation in present functioning. It is
characterized by significantly subaverage
intellectual functioning, existing concurrently with
related limitations in two or more of the following
applicable adaptable skills areas:
communication, self care, home living, social
skills, community use, self direction, health and
safety, functional academics, leisure, and work.
• Mental retardation manifests before age 18.

ASD
• Persons labeled with Autism Spectrum
Disorders (ASD) demonstrate mild to
severe deficits in
– 1) social interaction,
– 2) verbal and nonverbal communication, and
– 3) repetitive behaviors or interests.

ASD
• They will often have unusual responses to
sensory experiences, i.e., certain auditory,
visual, or tactile input.
• They will present in each individual child
differently. For instance, a child may have little
trouble learning to read but exhibit extremely
poor social interaction.
• Each child will display communication, social,
and behavioral patterns that are individual but fit
into the overall diagnosis of ASD.

• Some conditions in the spectrum are
known as Pervasive Developmental
Disorders, high functioning autism,
Asperger’s syndrome, Rett’s Syndrome,
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Fragile
X Syndrome, and non-verbal learning
disorders.

meaningful gestures by 1 year of age
• Does not speak one word by 16 months
• Does not combine two words by 2 years
• Does not respond to name
• Loses language or social skills

MGW
Appalachian State University

interpersonal relationships with peers and
teachers.

ADHD
inattentive
• One type of ADHD is predominantly
inattentive, with the student displaying
characteristics for at least 6 months and to
a degree that is maladaptive and does not
match maturational expectations for the
age when observed. There are nine
symptoms listed for inattention, and the
student must display at least six of them to
be categorized as an inattentive type.
