All About Elements • An element is a pure substance that is made up of only one type of atom. SILVER The Periodic Table All of the known elements are organized in the Periodic Table of Elements by their chemical symbol, atomic mass and atomic number Element Symbols Helium (starts with “H” like Hydrogen. What do you think the symbol will be?) What is the symbol for Calcium? Latin Names of Elements Element Classification Elements can be classified into 3 groups, metals, non-metals, and metalloids. Copper and Silver are both metals. All metals have similar properties. SILVER Metals are Malleable • Malleable means that metals can be hammered into sheets or different shapes. Metals are Shiny Metals are Ductile • Ductility means that metals can be drawn into wire.
