Weekly Sustainability News Summary
May 22, 2015
Company Initiatives:
 Shell CEO defends arctic drilling, environment record — Royal Dutch Shell RDS.A -1.45 %
PLC’s chief executive on Tuesday defended the company’s environmental record as its board was
peppered with questions about plans for Arctic exploration and the risks climate change poses to
its business. Full Article: Wall Street Journal
 Apple’s quest for a 100% renewably powered supply chain — Apple is ratcheting up action
toward a goal of becoming completely powered by renewable energy with a slew of recent
announcements. Full Article: Green Biz
Trends, Studies and Opinion:
 Global news organizations agree to share climate change content — An unprecedented
alliance of news publishers including the Guardian, El País, Le Monde and China Daily have
agreed to share climate change content to raise awareness in the run up to the next UN summit.
Full Article: The Guardian
 Updated NASA data: Global warming not causing any polar ice retreat — Updated data
from NASA satellite instruments reveal the Earth’s polar ice caps have not receded at all since the
satellite instruments began measuring the ice caps in 1979. Since the end of 2012, moreover, total
polar ice extent has largely remained above the post-1979 average. Full Article: Forbes
 More and more conservative thinkers want to tax carbon. Will politicians and activists
follow? — We’re in one of those moments again. One of those moments where people (yes,
mostly liberals) get together and hope really hard that the climate issue is becoming less divisive,
that there’s going to be a breakthrough on the Republican side, and that we’ll finally achieve
consensus to take action. Full Article: The Washington Post
 Global businesses must lead the way on climate action — Major business leaders will gather in
Paris this week for the Business and Climate Summit. It comes six months before the Paris
climate conference, COP21, the aim of which is well known: to reach a universal agreement
limiting the rise in global average temperature to 2C above pre-industrial levels. Full Article:
The Guardian
Government and Politics:
 Obama recasts climate change as a more far-reaching peril — President Obama will use a
commencement address at the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut on Wednesday to cast his
push for urgent action to combat climate change as a national security imperative, arguing that the
warming of the planet poses an “immediate risk” to the United States. Full Article: The New
York Times
