INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACT Name: Joshua Winters Course #: BMSC 866 Title of Project: SemesterlYear: Spring/20 10 Credits: 4 Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Rudolph Evaluation of Muscle Characteristics (note: University "Special Problem/Independent Study" Titling Form must be filled out) Narrative Description of the Supervised Study: This course will involve formal lecture and laboratory components covering basic neurophysiology of skeletal muscle and how it responds to electrical stimulation and independent literature review and laboratory activities relating to force development in health individuals and possibly in people with kneeOA. Student will examine the effects of fatigue on submaximal voluntary and stimulated rates of knee extension force production. The student will develop and implement an adequate testing protocol that will accurately measure and assess these variables. Objectives of the Study (be specific): -compare and contrast the manner in which motor neurons are activated volitionally and electrically -develop protocols for testing the quickness of force production and the relative composition of different motor units in the muscles of older adults compared to young adults. -Analyze and assess all the data collected -Modify any specific components of this protocol for use in an osteoarthritis population. Student Timetable for Project Listed by Week: Weeks 1-4 - Electrophysiology of skeletal muscle: readings and laboratory activities Weeks 5-8 - protocol development Weeks 8-end of semester - data analysis Faculty Sponsor's Obligations (completed by sponsor): provide guidance through formal lectures, meetings and directed readings Evaluation Methodology (including weightings by %): written exam (30%); data analysis and interpretation (70%) Certification: Student is Eligible to Take Independent Study this Semester: Yes X No Independent Study Credits Taken Previously - Semester: Summer/2009 Credits: 3 StudentS~nature&Da~:~~~~~~~~~~~~~_~~~~~lola Faculty Advisor Signatur & Date: t,a .J1-, h LA z/ql/tJ } Academic Director, BIOMSlDate: ~ ~....- Changes Recommended by Any of the Above: i 2-/1 II~ I '
