different types of muscle tissue noting their functions
and structure.
Bell Ringer:
“Epithelial tissues are found in the skin, linings
of the organs and cavities, and used for
protection. Where do you think muscle tissues
are found in the body, and what do you think
they are used for?”

General Characteristics
Ability to contract
1. Muscle fibers contract (shorten)
2. Fibers pull at attached ends

Types of Muscle Tissues
• Skeletal
• Smooth
• Cardiac
Where might you find these types?
Skeletal Muscle Tissue
• Structure – long, thread like cells, alternating
light and dark striations, many nuclei
• Control – Voluntary (conscious effort)
• Location – Muscles that attach to bone and
enable movement
• What do they enable us to do (function)?
Make facial expressions, write, talk, sing, chew,
swallow, breathe
Smooth Muscle Tissue
• Structure – shorter than skeletal tissues, no
striations, single (central) nucleus per cell,
spindle shaped
• Control – Involutary (controlled w/out effort)
• Location – intestines, blood vessels, urinary
tract, stomach, uterus
• What do they enable us to do (function)?
Digest food, constrict blood vessels, empty the
bladder
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
• Structure – striated, joined end to end by
intercalated disks to form networks
(branched), single nucleus per cell
• Control – involuntary (controlled w/out effort)
• Location – only in the heart
• What do they enable us to do (function)?
Pump blood through the heart into the blood
vessels
