I only need to floss if I have
food stuck in between my

rob the mother’s teeth of
calcium.
Acid erosion
Pregnancy gingivitis
Bacteria can spread from mother to
child

Wisdom teeth must be removed
because they will always cause a
problem.
FACT OR FICTION?
Chewing gum is bad for your
teeth.
XYLITOL- REDUCES BACTERIA IN
THE MOUTH THAT CAUSE DECAY
FACT!
Smoking causes more than half
of all oral cancers.
Oral cancer can be deadly (8,000
deaths per year).
E-Cigarettes/Vaping
Uses nicotine in various strengths
Have 40 carcinogens (less than cigarettes,
but not harmless)
Nicotine increases heart rate & blood
pressure
2nd hand vapor does contain some nicotine
Can lead to addiction to nicotine, smoking?
Is not a smoking cessation device
Age restriction?
Hookah
Uses a very sticky flavored tobacco (shisha) which
contains nicotine
Has more carcinogens than cigarettes (possibly more
harmful – 1 puff has 12 X more smoke than a cigarette).
Toxic chemicals are not filtered out by the water.
The charcoal used to heat tobacco in the hookah
increases the health risks by producing smoke that
contains high levels of carbon monoxide, metals, and
cancer-causing chemicals. (4 X more per 45 mins.)
Longer periods of exposure
Risk of infectious disease when sharing (Herpes, flu, etc.)
Risk of oral cancer and periodontal disease
Consequences of Tobacco Use
ORAL CANCER EXAM
CHECK SIDES OF THE TONGUE
CHECK FLOOR OF THE MOUTH
CHECK THE PALATE
CHECK INSIDE CHEEKS
CHECK INSIDE LIPS
