-A Hole In The Heart-
By: Lourdes & Abraham
What is Atrial Septal
Defect?

Atrial Septal Defect is?
 A condition that
occurs when there
is a hole in the
heart
 Allows blood
flow from the
right-side of the
atrium to the left
side.
What Does A.S.D. Do?
 A.S.D. causes extra
blood flow in
chambers in the
heart.
 A hole in the heart
allows deoxygenated
blood from the left
side of the heart to
mix with oxygenated
blood from the right
side of the heart.
What Are the Effects of
A.S.D.?
 Over the years the
right side of the heart
may become tired
from working harder
to pump the blood.
This may lead to:
 Heart failure.
 High Blood Pressure.
 Stroke.
What are the three major
types of A.S.D.
 Secundum: most
common (most of
these close on their
own).
 Primum: least
common (usually
occurs with other
abnormalities in the
heart).
 Sinus Venosus:
occurs in the upper
part of the heart
(rare).
What are the causes of
A.S.D.
 It is hereditary.
 There are no other
known causes.
 Most common in
new borns and
infants.
How someone lives with
A.S.D
 If the hole is
substantially large
the patient will need
to undergo open
heart surgery.
 Many can lead a
healthy life with this
condition.
 They need medical
attention.
 And arrhythmias
may develop over
time.
