Butterfly Weed Asclepias tuberosa
This perennial is characterized by the
fact that its stem does not contain
milky juice. It has lance-shaped
leaves and orange, showy flowers.
The butterfly weed is found on dry
roadsides and on prairies. The
Cherokee, Delaware, Iroquois,
Menominee, Mohegan, Navajo,
Omaha, Ponca, and Rappahannock
Native Americans used the butterfly
weed. A tea made of the root of the
plant was used to treat lung
inflammations, asthma, bronchitis,
and as an anodyne, laxative, diuretic,
and expectorant. A root poultice was
used to treat bruises, swellings,
rheumatism, and lameness.
