The Four Basic Parts of Plants
 Leaves
 Stems
 Roots
 Flowers
Roots

Can make up over half of the body of a
plant.
Roots

Functions




Anchor plant to soil
Absorb and transport water & minerals
Store food.
Propagate (reproduce) some type plants
External Parts of Roots
1.
Root Cap


Indicates
growth of
new cells.
Protects
growing part
of the root
as it pushes
through the
soil.
External Parts of Roots
2.
Tap Root


Long and thick with
smaller branches
Reach deep into
ground to get water.

Examples: Carrots
and radishes store
food.
External Parts of Roots
3.
Root Hairs



Tiny one celled hairlike projections of
the cells located
above the tips of
roots.
Increase surface
area.
Absorb water &
minerals.
Internal Parts of Roots

Much like those of stems with phloem
and xylem layers.

Phloem
The outer layer.
 Carries food (sugars) produced by
photosynthesis down the plant.


Xylem
The inner layer.
 Carries water & minerals up to the stem.
