democracy from 461-429 BC.
- period between the Persian and
Peloponnesian Wars
Nickname – “First Citizen”
Had 3 Major Goals for Athens:
 Strengthen Democracy
 Increase trade

How did he help democracy in Athens?
- Increased number of paid public
officials.
- Meant didn’t have to be wealthy to
hold office; gave free males more
equal voice.
How did he increase trade?
- Built up Navy
- Expanded Greek Empire (Delian
League)
How did he beautify Greece?
- Rebuilt structures after Persian Wars.
- Built up Athens as center of Greek
culture.

 Corinthian – Tallest; top carved to look like
