What is a database
A database is an ordered collection of information
which allows searching for specific information and
enables individual items to be added and amended.
An example of a database is an address book : this
contains names, addresses and telephone numbers,
normally arranged in alphabetical groups.
Computers can help to
handle information very quickly.
A computer database might contain exactly the
same information - but would allow the user to
store, retrieve, organise and compare information
with far greater speed and efficiency.
Items in a computer database can be accessed
in a systematic way by asking questions.
