Let’s Talk about Space The Sun • “Born” 4.6 billion years ago. • Releases so much energy it could shine for 10 billion years! • Some parts are 27,000,000 degrees Farenheit! • The sun is actually a star! Stars! • Huge balls of glowing gas. • Over 200 billion BILLION stars! • The sun is NOT the largest sun in the sky. It is the CLOSEST star to us. Constellations • a group of stars that when seen from Earth, form a pattern • Some are named after animals or mythological creatures • As the Earth turns, you can see different constellations! • There are 88! Constellation Myths • Many constellations have myths or legends which describe how the star patterns were formed. Constellation Myth Example • Constellation: Pisces • The Greeks and Romans recognized two fish in these stars. They were said to be Aphrodite and her son Eros, who, fleeing from the giant Typhon, jumped into a stream, turned into fish, and swam away to safety. They tied their tails together so they wouldn’t be separated. Now go and learn about some more constellations, and make your own!
