Characteristics
of the Sun
The Sun is the
nearest star to the
Earth. It is made up
of very hot gases with
the center of the Sun
measuring about 15
million °C!!!
The Sun is the only
star in our solar
system. The stars that
we see in the night sky
are much farther away
in other solar systems.
The Sun is a
yellow dwarf
star.
Photosphere is
the name given
to the surface
of the Sun.

Sunspots are dark
spots on the surface of
the Sun where the
temperature is lower
than the surrounding
areas.

The chromosphere
lies just outside the
photosphere and is
almost transparent.
It is seen as a red
glow around the Sun.

The corona is the
outermost layer of
gases surrounding
the Sun. It can
only be seen during
a solar eclipse.

What are
sunspots and
where are they
found?
Sunspots are dark
spots on the surface
of the Sun
(photosphere) where
the temperature is
lower than the
surrounding areas.
When can we
see the
corona on
the Earth?
We can only
see the corona
during a solar
eclipse.
Which layer can
be seen as a red
glow around the
Sun and is
almost
transparent?
The chromosphere
is seen as a red
glow around the
Sun and almost
transparent.
