The Solar System
by
Dylan Calleson
The sun is at the center of our solar
system.
Our solar system is made up of
the sun and eight planets.
Mercury
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.
Venus
Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system.
Earth
Earth is the third planet from the sun.
Mars
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun .
Jupiter
Jupiter is filled with gases and is the fifth planet from the sun.
Saturn
Saturn has rings and is the sixth planet from the sun.
Uranus
Uranus is the god of the sky.
Neptune
Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun.
Moons
Earth’s moon
Jupiter’s moons
It takes Earth’s moon about 27
days to orbit around the Earth and
go back to the original place that it
started in.
One of Jupiter’s moons Ganymede, is
the largest moon in the Solar System.
Mars’ moons
Saturn’s moons
Mars’ moons Deimos and
Phobos are really small. They
are only 12.6 and 22.2
kilometers. Those two moons
are smaller than most towns.
One of Saturn's moons (Pan), was
discovered by Mark R. Showalter
in 1990 is the closest planet to
Saturn's surface. Another moon
(Atlas), was discovered in 1980 by
R. Terrile.
Asteroids
 Asteroids are broken-off pieces of early
planets in the Solar System. The asteroids
that are closer to the sun are mostly made
of carbon. An asteroid is a large rock in
outer space.
Meteoroids
 Meteoroids are made of rock and ice.
Shooting stars are actually meteoroids.
When a meteoroid comes into Earth’s
atmosphere it is then called a meteor.
Comets
 Comets are made of ice, carbon dioxide,
and rock. The rock in the comets are mostly
made of small dust or sand grains.
