WHAT’S POSSIBLE THE FACE OF HEALTHCARE’S FUTURE 2014 NORTH SHORE-LIJ ANNUAL REPORT N O RT H S H O R E - L I J 2 Dear Friends: At North Shore-LIJ, improving the patient experience is our goal each and every day. It is a responsibility that our 54,000 plus employees welcome and take extremely seriously. Equal parts rewarding, demanding and life-changing — our healthcare vocations challenge us and make us proud. We believe our employees and volunteers are both the face and future of healthcare. They are innovators, leaders, healers and caretakers. Their work touches patients and families and reaches across generations. Today, more than ever before, their actions have national and international implications. Illnesses like Ebola, for example, once thought to be a problem an ocean and continent away, have tested our capability to respond to a previously unexpected threat within a matter of hours. We are tested in other ways as well. The introduction of a new payment model, greater emphasis on population health management and a more diversified business approach — including providing health insurance and exploring new medical ventures — requires an adaptability and expertise that has created both opportunity and pressure unlike any we have seen before. Coupled with our growth and expansion to Brooklyn, Westchester and beyond, these factors will challenge our ability and resolve to view the opportunities presented to us in a new light. For all the modern healthcare realities we face, we turn to our employees, volunteers and supporters to lead the way. They show what is possible now and how it will leave a lasting impact tomorrow. Significant and generous investments in our health system made by our closest philanthropic partners — such as those featured in this report — help fuel the innovative models we develop that set us apart. The lives our employees and volunteers touch and the difference they make through their work is eternal and truly unmatched by any other industry. Mahatma Gandhi encouraged us to be the change we wished to see in the world. It is not an exaggeration to say that our employees’ work together is doing just that. They are changing the world and turning our collective wish of better health into a reality for all. Sincerely, Michael J. Dowling President & CEO Mark L. Our entire staff is dedicated to the health system’s commitment to excellence, quality, compassion and improving the health of the community, and works tirelessly every day to make it a reality for our patients. With the help of our donors, our passion is translated into outstanding care and groundbreaking research. Support from individuals, families, corporations and foundations helps ensure that we can continue our clinical programs and research, and that we can uphold our promise of providing exceptional care to the community we serve. The steadfast partners and their families highlighted on the pages to follow are among our valued supporters, whose investments have helped North Shore-LIJ to become one of the most advanced, innovative healthcare systems in the nation. N O RT H S H O R E - L I J 40 THE BOHLSEN FAMILY The Bohlsen family — John, Linda and sons Michael and Kurt — continues their support of North ShoreLIJ’s mission to the communities it serves and their long-standing commitment to the transformation of the Southside Hospital campus, with a significant investment to support its new Emergency Department — one of the busiest in Suffolk County. Serving an expanding, active and maturing resident population, Southside’s Emergency Department now averages 70,000 annual visits, within a space originally designed for 18,000 visits. The Bohlsens are motivated to give back, following North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to expand and elevate Southside from a local community hospital to a tertiary hospital with a renowned cardiac surgery program. The family’s dedication to meet the healthcare needs of local residents coupled with their continued commitment to philanthropy will ensure exceptional healthcare for future generations. 41 2 0 1 4 A N N UA L R E P O R T THE MACK FAMILY Philanthropists Phyllis and William Mack have been friends and benefactors of North Shore-LIJ for more than 40 years. The generosity shown by the Macks — for whom the main Lenox Hill HealthPlex pavilion is named — places them at the forefront of the health system’s most transformative supporters by directing their philanthropy towards impactful, mission-critical initiatives. Lenox Hill HealthPlex brings state-ofthe-art, 24/7 integrated emergency care and health and wellness services to better address the total health needs of residents in downtown Manhattan — an area left vulnerable with the closing of St. Vincent’s Hospital in 2010. N O RT H S H O R E - L I J 42 SANDRA ATLAS BASS A life trustee and steadfast philanthropic partner of the North Shore-LIJ Health System for 25 years, Sandra Atlas Bass has touched the lives of thousands of patients of all ages through her impactful generosity. Her latest gift will help to create and name the Sandra Atlas Bass Center for Liver Diseases, which will provide advanced, compassionate care to patients in a pleasant, convenient outpatient location. Ms. Bass’ legacy can be seen and felt in nearly every corner of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, including Cohen Children’s Medical Center, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the North Shore University Hospital campus, which bears her name. 43 2 0 1 4 A N N UA L R E P O R T North Shore-LIJ YEAR IN REVIEW/2014 HIGHLIGHTS • For the eighth consecutive year, Cohen Children’s Medical Center is ranked as one of the nation’s elite children’s hospitals by US News & World Report in its annual “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” survey.
