Caption: In the days that followed the dropping of the atomic bomb on the Japanese
cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Americans expressed relief, regret, and fear. As people
learned of the unimaginable damage unleashed by the bomb, they questioned who would
obtain this weapon next. Were Americans vulnerable to such an attack? Who were the
enemies of the United States? These questions soon contributed to the mounting tensions
between the United States and the Soviet Union.
